Halifax have been one of the biggest mortgage lenders in the last 20 years, helping with the boom in property ownership and property values during that time.
Owned by many people, it was originally a Building Society that grew through acquition until it reached a size that allowed it to be bought by Bank of Scotland, creating HBOS - a mortgage market leader in terms of sales for year on year.
Recent issues with risk, lending policy and government bail-outs meant that Halifax nearly disappeared from High Street, but the rescue have allowed this important lender to survive. Gone are the days of market leading rates but the appetite to lend money in the property market is slowly improving.
